Our Mission

We seek to serve the poor and homeless of our community

by sharing the love of God and giving them:

Food for Their Bodies,  Kindness for Their Souls, & Hope for the Future.

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen is an inter-denominational, inter-faith ministry, made up of a partnership of various individuals and organizations across the Upstate. We share a common belief that when we serve those in need, we serve God.

FAST FACTS

Did you know…

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen opened in 1982. For 29 years, it has operated out of a 300-square-foot kitchen in the Second Presbyterian Church gymnasium.

When the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen first opened, it served 20-25 homeless men each day. Today it serves more than 500 men, women and children a hot noonday meal 365 days a year.

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen has only three part-time paid staff members and more than 600 volunteers. Lou Landrum has served as the Director for 9 years.

In 2009, the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen received it’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

The future home of the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen is 136 S. Forest Street in the old Kapasi Glass Mart building. This 12,000 square-foot building was purchased in September 2010, with plans to begin renovation in the spring of 2011.

To date the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen has raised nearly $640,000 in gifts and pledges for the renovation project. But we’re not there yet and need your help! Please consider a tax-deductible donation or pledge to help us reach our goal.

WE NEED YOU!

With only two paid part-time staff members (Director, Lou Landrum and Director’s Assistant, Ollie Smith), the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen is dependent on our volunteers…we couldn’t do it without them! We have more than 600 dedicated community volunteers.

We also have many schools and groups that volunteer at the SSK on a regular basis. In addition, many local businesses volunteer to help out from time to time.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, please contact Lou Landrum at 864-583-6320 or by email at lelansoupk@bellsouth.net
