Carl “The Kid” Long, a Rock Hill native, played two season with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro League. Long was the first African American to play for the Carolina League’s Kinston Eagles in North Carolina and holds its RBI record. After baseball, Long went on to become the first African American deputy sherriff and detective in Kinston, NC. Long joined Open Mic Daily to discuss his time in the Negro League and to promote the Spartanburg County Public Libraries’s new exhibit, Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience. You can meet Long and other former Negro League players tomorrow afternoon at the Spartanburg County Headquarters Library on Church Street.

Chapman boy’s head basketball coach Jerry Waters announced he was retiring Tuesday. Coach Waters has coached for 47 years, 25 of those at the high school level. His record of 859-299 includes four 4A state titles and the 1982 NAIA Championship as head coach of the USC Spartanburg Rifles. Waters joined Open Mic Daily to discuss his decision and his upcoming book.

Legendary author, historian, media personality Bert Sugar passed away this weekend. Sugar was best known for covering boxing, but he also wrote books on baseball, wrestling, New York city, and even Houdini. Back in 2009 he joined Open Mic Daily to discuss his then latest book, Bert Sugar’s Baseball Hall of Fame: A Living History of America’s Greatest Game.
