SCHSL extends off season practice: Doug Lowe audio
The South Carolina High School League recently ruled to open more of the school year to off season practice. In fact, the only time practice can not be held under the new rule is the first five weeks of the in season sport. For example, when fall sports start practicing Aug. 2, practice for winter and spring sports can begin Sept. 7. The same rules would apply for when winter and spring seasons begin. There will also be an increase in the number of spring football practices allowed. These changes won’t take effect until the 2014 seasons.
Doug Lowe, former boys basketball coach at Spartanburg High School, shared his thoughts on the changes touching on the potential impact for students and staff, what the “keeping up the Jones” mentality has done to high school athletics, and more.
