Carl Long, former Negro League player: audio
Carl “The Kid” Long, a Rock Hill native, played two season with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro League. Long was the first African American to play for the Carolina League’s Kinston Eagles in North Carolina and holds its RBI record. After baseball, Long went on to become the first African American deputy sherriff and detective in Kinston, NC. Long joined Open Mic Daily to discuss his time in the Negro League and to promote the Spartanburg County Public Libraries’s new exhibit, Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience. You can meet Long and other former Negro League players tomorrow afternoon at the Spartanburg County Headquarters Library on Church Street.
